Delivery -
The symptoms suggesting delivery are - white or watery discharge through vagina, blood discharge through vagina, pains originating from back and spreading to the abdomen and then to the thighs with increasing frequency.
When the patient gets admitted to the hospital the doctor does an internal examination to decide the further course of action.
Usually in the first delivery it takes around 12 or more hours for delivery.
For pain relief during delivery the patient has various options - drugs given through the vein, drugs given through a catheter in the spine (epidural analgesia)
  • 70 - 80 % of deliveries are normal ( vaginal ) deliveries
  • 20 - 30 % of deliveries require a caeserian section. the common reasons for caeserian are
  • Fetal Distress - i.e. passage of stools inside the womb by the child, very high or very low heart beats of the baby
  • Cephalo pelvic disproportion - i.e. the baby is too large for the mother's pelvis
  • Breech - i.e. if the baby's buttocks are in the lower part of the uterus instead of the head.
  • Previous caeserian - due to possibility of the stitches tearing apart the patient is discharged after 48 hours of delivery.
If the patient undergoes caeserian section - she is not allowed to eat for 6 hours after surgery. after that she is asked to take liquids - if there is no vomitting then she is allowed to take soft food for the next 24 hours. on the second day she is allowed to take full diet, the catheter for urine is removed  and the patient can move around. on the third day the patient takes a bath and is discharged. she is asked to follow up on the 10th. day of delivery to see the stitches.
